Birkdale Dump & Redlands Tip Guide — New Rules from 6 October 2026

From Tuesday 6 October 2026, Redland City Council's mainland Recycling and Waste Centres at Birkdale and Redland Bay give residents 12 free visits per vehicle each financial year for general waste and green waste. Here's what changed, what stays free, and what now costs money.

What changed at the Birkdale dump?

    • 12 free visits per vehicle, per financial year for general mixed waste (landfill) and green waste loads.
    • After 12 visits, a user-pays fee applies to those loads.
    • Always charged now: bricks and concrete, clean soil, mattresses, timber and tyres.
    • Applies at both Birkdale and Redland Bay. The island centres are not part of this change.

Council says 9 in 10 vehicles visit fewer than 12 times a year, so most households won't notice. The change targets heavy users: an audit found 9% of visitors brought in around 40% of landfill and green waste.

    Still free with unlimited visits

    • Household recyclables, including cardboard
    • Scrap metal and whitegoods
    • E-waste (TVs, computers, small appliances)
    • Barbecue gas bottles and lead-acid (car) batteries
    • Used motor oil and paint
    • Second-hand items for RecycleWorld
    • Asbestos, chemicals and other hazardous household waste (within existing limits and gate rules)

Tip: sort your trailer before you go. Recyclables dropped off separately don't use up one of your 12 visits.

Current fee guide (Birkdale, 2025–26 commercial rates)

    • Mattresses — $20 each
    • Car/motorbike tyre — $18 off rim, $24 on rim

    Commercial waste and tradies

Waste from paid work (including jobs at someone's home) is commercial waste, and fees apply. If you use a work ute for your own household rubbish, council lets you apply for vouchers or dispute your commercial status within two weeks of a notice.

Used your 12 visits? Other options

    Hard rubbish and kerbside cleanup
