Public Holidays in the Redlands
The Redlands follows Queensland's public holiday calendar. Use this as a quick reference for when council services, schools, banks and most local businesses are closed.
Queensland public holidays
- New Year's Day — 1 January
- Australia Day — 26 January
- Good Friday — varies
- Easter Saturday — varies
- Easter Sunday — varies
- Easter Monday — varies
- Anzac Day — 25 April
- Labour Day (QLD) — first Monday in May
- King's Birthday — first Monday in October
- Christmas Day — 25 December
- Boxing Day — 26 December
Where a public holiday falls on a weekend, a substitute weekday is often gazetted. Always check the latest dates on the Queensland Government public holidays page.
The Ekka holiday (Brisbane Show)
The Redlands does not observe the Brisbane Ekka People's Day public holiday — that's a Brisbane City Council-only holiday. Redlands schools and businesses operate as normal.
What's usually closed on public holidays
- Redland City Council customer service centres and libraries
- Banks, Centrelink and Medicare offices
- Schools and most childcare centres
- Many medical clinics (after-hours and emergency departments stay open)
What's usually open
- Major supermarkets and shopping centres (reduced hours)
- Petrol stations, pharmacies and convenience stores
- Cafes, restaurants and takeaway venues (often with a public-holiday surcharge)
- Emergency services — call 000 for police, fire or ambulance
Public-holiday surcharges
Many Redlands cafes and restaurants apply a 10–15% surcharge on public holidays to cover penalty rates. Menus must legally display this; it's normal, not a scam.
